A bold move is about to be unveiled by the UK government, and it's causing quite a stir! The plan? To adopt Denmark's stringent immigration policies, which are among the toughest in Europe. But here's where it gets controversial...
Shabana Mahmood, the UK's Home Secretary, is set to announce changes to the country's immigration rules, inspired by Denmark's approach. Last month, officials were dispatched to Denmark to study their border control and asylum policies, and now, the UK is considering implementing similar measures.
Denmark's policies are known for their strictness, particularly when it comes to family reunions and refugee status. Refugees fleeing conflict are often granted only temporary stays, and Denmark decides which countries are considered safe for return. In 2022, Denmark notified over 1,200 refugees from Damascus that their residency permits would not be renewed, a decision that sparked international criticism.
The UK Home Office is also eyeing Denmark's rules for family reunions. Refugees must meet numerous criteria for their partners to join them, including being over 24 years old, and the partner in Denmark must not have claimed benefits for three years. Both partners must also pass a Danish language test, and those living in government-designated "parallel societies" are barred from family reunion.
Denmark's approach has not been without controversy. In 2021, the country passed a law allowing it to process asylum seekers outside Europe, a move that angered human rights advocates and the UN. Some Labour MPs, like Clive Lewis, have criticized the UK's plans, arguing that Denmark's Social Democrats have taken a "hardcore" approach to immigration, adopting far-right talking points.
Nadia Whittome, another Labour MP, described the proposed path as "dangerous" and "undeniably racist," especially regarding Denmark's policies on "parallel societies." However, not all Labour MPs agree. Jo White, who represents "red wall" seats, wants the government to go even further in adopting Danish policies.
Mahmood, appointed in September, has faced criticism from charities for "scapegoating" migrants. After her conference speech, over 100 charities called on her to address housing, climate, and NHS issues, and to stop using "performative policies" that cause harm.
